New research from Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan is changing how scientists think about fat, diabetes and metabolic health by showing that not all fat loss is automatically healthy. Reported by ScienceDaily on 26 July 2026, the study found that when fat cells become damaged, they can turn inflammatory, lose their ability to safely store lipids and eventually disappear, disrupting the bodys normal metabolism. This is important because healthy fat tissue acts like a storage and buffering system, keeping excess lipids away from organs such as the liver, pancreas and muscles, where fat build-up can contribute to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest that diabetes risk is not only about carrying too much fat, but also about whether fat cells remain healthy enough to do their job. When damaged fat tissue can no longer store energy properly, fats may spill into the bloodstream or settle in organs where they interfere with glucose control.
