The Sweet Spice With Blood-Sugar Benefits and Careful Limits
News Image Cinnamon is a fragrant spice rich in antioxidants and natural plant compounds that may support blood-sugar balance, heart health, digestion and inflammation control when used in moderate amounts. It can add sweetness and flavour to foods without extra sugar, making it useful in oats, tea, smoothies and healthy baking. Some studies suggest cinnamon may help improve insulin sensitivity and support cholesterol balance, although it should never replace diabetes medication or medical care. However, too much cinnamon, especially cassia cinnamon, can contain high levels of coumarin, which may affect the liver if consumed in large amounts over time. It may also irritate the mouth or stomach in sensitive people and should be used cautiously by those on blood-thinning or diabetes medication. For most people, cinnamon is safest as a small everyday spice rather than a high-dose supplement.
